James Shand

Managing Director

James has some 40 years experience in the IT technology industry with over 30 years being related directly to digital print. This extends from operations where he has hands-on experience working in operational environments through to the commercial aspects dealing with multi-million pound contracts in sales and commercial management. He has held a number of directorship positions as well as establishing a number of strategic management consulting businesses supporting the digital document industry.

Some of the clients James has worked with in recent years are: VW Financial Services; Severn Trent Water; British Telecom; Kern (UK); edotech (Barclays Bank) which was an MBO in May 2000 where he was the Commercial Director. edotech Limited became one of the fastest growing companies in the UK, developing its client base from £20 million ($37m) turnover in 2000 to some £80 million ($149m) in 2004. Client successes in which James took the lead commercial role were British Telecom; MBNA Bank Europe; Legal & General and FirstAssist.

In 2004 Astron acquired edotech Limited and in June 2005 James left to create another management consultancy e-knows Limited. He has co-authored a number of research publications – The ‘True Cost’ of Digital Colour Printing, published June 2005 and the Implementation and use of ADF in the UK. Clients have included the Canadian Government; Beeri Printers (Israel); Jersey Post (Jpromail – Channel Islands); PrintSoft (USA); Canon UK & Europe.

James regularly speaks at industry events such as Xplor International, Canon Europe, British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF), HP, Xerox, eForma, European Business Document Association (EBDA) and IPEX and publishes thought leadership articles.

James has also supported the digital printing industry since 1980 when he created the UK Xerox Users Group and discovered Xplor International in the USA. He was elected to the Xplor Association Board of Directors (ABOD) for the International Region in 1982-1989. He has served on a number of JTCs (Joint Councils on Technology) and Xplor Committees and elected as the first non-American president for Xplor in 1987 and again in 1988. He returned to mainstream Xplor in 1999 where he was elected as the UK Association Board of Directors representative and became chairman (president) again in 2001-2004 and is a current member of the Association Board of Directors.
